AS Lit: advice for the mock exam

Our mock exam for Literature will be next Friday (5th February), in our normal classroom.

It will run from 11.20 - 1.20pm.

Remember that our lesson time is different for next week only - we won't break for lunch but will finish at 1.20 instead of 2.20pm.

You will need to bring your poetry text and Streetcar.

The exam is structured as follows:

Section A: Poetry (24 marks)

There will be two questions, you choose one of them to answer
Remember that the question will name a poem you must write about, and then you must choose another poem which would work well in comparison
Read the question (the topic/theme) carefully!

You are being assessed on how well you:
  • provide close textual analysis (with accurate literary terminology)
  • compare your two poems
Section B: Streetcar (48 marks)

In the mock there will be one question for you to answer.
{In the real exam, there will be two & you choose one}

You are being assessed on how well you:
  • offer interpretations in relation to the question
  • show an appreciation of the influence of context on the text
  • analyse Williams' techniques in creating his drama
Because Streetcar is weighted so much more heavily (it is worth twice as many marks!),
you should divide your time accordingly. I suggest:
  • 45 mins on the Poetry question
  • 75 mins on the Streetcar question

How to revise:
  • re-read the poems we have studied so far & your notes
  • focus on a) key ideas each poem is exploring b) literary devices used to create meaning
  • re-read the two formal assessments you did in the first term
  • re-read the two pieces of written homework you have done for me on Streetcar
  • go through your notes from Friday's lesson (29th January)
  • skim-read Streetcar
